Thanks for the memories

I was just amazed at the news last night, where they were reporting more missing memory sticks and laptops containing sensitive information. I think this last one was about people who were insolvent (funny word, think they mean bankrupt - why would anyone want information about them, if you were a criminal surely it would be better to have information about people who are solvent?). And before that it was names of prison officers, and before that people who got child benefit, and before that something political, and before that...can't remember. But anyway, each week just about there's some news about data that's gone, been taken or lost. Why don't they make people check stuff at the door, like they do in libraries and art galleries? If it's so sensitive, why is it on a memory stick anyway? Surely if they have broadband and encryptions they can send this stuff to the correct person, instead of trusting it to the royal mail or a courier on a bike, or however they do it. Kind of reminds me of old spy films, things being left on trains or in hollow tree trunks. Kind reminds me as well of old stories about Dick Turpin the highway man who robbed people travelling in coaches with all their gold or jewels and stuff. There're always going to be more Dick Turpins, and it's never going to be safe on the highway, any highway. Things are never going to be better, the more information you have on files everywhere, the worse it's going to be.
