Starry starry night...

This is a photo of a light in Susie's house, in the hall - it's just a bare bulb (an eco-bulb, naturally) behind a huge catering-size colander which she found (about 8 years ago, she says) in a skip at the back of a restaurant or pub (in William Street, which is in the West End of Edinburgh). It still had bits of dried pasta stuck to it (she has scrubbed it though). She quite often crosses roads just to look in skips. Other things she has found in them include half a dozen cut-glass Sundae dishes (the kind that, she says, in the 1950s you would get a grilled half grapefruit in, for your breakfast, or maybe a peach melba, very generous in size), and a mahogany table (although she let a friend have the use of that and never got it back) which had been chucked out of a building in Charlotte Square (which she thinks was some kind of long established lawyer's offices, and the table had quite big ink stains on it). Anyway, the thing about this colander shade is, because the eco-bulb takes a while to come on properly, to get to its full brilliance, when you switch on the light glows gently in the dark, then a bit more, and a bit more, and it's like watching stars come out, or the engines of a space ship or something, warming up. Quite pretty and fascinating.
