Tuesday is not halfway
Tuesday is not halfway through a week, is it? I don't think so anyway. I'd say Wednesday is half way. Supposing the weekend counts as a kind of beginning and end, and there are five weekdays, then Wednesday is in the middle, half way from Sunday and half way to Saturday. But today someone said to me "yeah, it's the middle of the week" and it annoyed me, because it had only just been Monday! It wasn't even Tuesday afternoon!!! It was Tuesday midday, and that made it still the beginning of the week. Or at least, not exactly the very beginning, because that was Monday. Unless like some weird people you think the week starts with Sunday. That would be mental!! All the time you're a kid at school you're desperate for the end of Friday afternoon, so that you have Friday night, Saturday morning, afternoon and night, and then Sunday, a whole long day which feels like the most un-normal day, almost as if it smelled or tasted different - and it did, because you might go to church, or something, visit relatives, go to the zoo, or skating, or for a walk in the park, the kind of thing you only do on the last day of freedom. Not like Saturday, when you maybe would go with your parents to do the weekly shopping, getting food and maybe things for their garden, or maybe clothes, or maybe to the cinema if you were lucky. And then that evening your parents might get a babysitter and they would go out, and you would feel that it was okay because you'd go to bed a bit late and the next morning you could have a long lie and get up and laze around in your jammies, and eat Rice Krispies but then you had to put on your good shoes or coat and get in the car to collect your Gran and all go to Mass, and then come home for lunch and it would be roast chicken and a nice pudding, and in the afternoon you could maybe read a book or have a friend round to play. That's what Sundays are for, not like Saturdays. Although now most days seem the same, because all the shops are open and you can buy alcohol and go to Ikea and stuff any old time of any old day, just about. Anyway, I think Weekends ('eek-ends) are different from weekdays ('eek-days) starting from when you first go to school, and I think (and I'm over twenty one now) they always feel like that. My Mum and Dad do too.
